Related content which might interest you: Changes of heart rate variability in different types of breathing in patients with bronchial asthma (BA) In general and irrespective of mode of breathing, adventitious LS were not able to reflect lung disease indicators. Although adventitious LS were found with similar frequency in both modes of breathing, less than half of the subjects with positive findings were identified by both SB and SA. The mode of breathing had an impact on adventitious LS. Crackles and wheezes were not associated with self-reported heart/lung diseases or FEV1% predicted<80, either during SB or SA. This association was only significant at SA (p=0.03). However, dyspnea was more frequently reported when expiratory wheezes were present. No association was found between dyspnea and crackles. Nine were identified by both methods (kappa=0.32 95%CI 0.11-0.54). Expiratory wheezes were heard in 18 participants (15.5%) during SB and in 23 during SA (19.8%). Only 5 of these participants were identified by both methods (kappa=0.13 95%CI -0.08-0.34). Inspiratory crackles were heard in 19 participants (16.4%) during SB and in 18 during SA (15.5%).

Lung sounds were recorded at 6 chest locations, first during spontaneous breathing (SB) and then at a standardized airflow (SA) of 1.5l/s. The subjects reported heart/lung diseases and the degree of dyspnea (mMRC questionnaire), and spirometry was carried out. This study assessed whether the presence of adventitious LS differ between spontaneous and standardized breathing in a general population.Ī cross-sectional study with 116 subjects (53.4% female, 59.2☑1.6y) was conducted. Session: Chronic respiratory disease: effects of rehabilitation interventions in patients Session type: Thematic Posterįor clinical practice and research, it would be easier to record LS without simultaneously measuring airflow.
